Computer Tip of the Month

How many words is that?

When writing an email or document, there may come a time to check how many words it has. Sadly, not all programs will contain a word counter - but that doesn't mean you can't copy & paste your text into Microsoft Office Word and let it count the number of words for you.

To count the number of words (or letters & more) in Microsoft Office Word, select the Review ribbon, then click on Word Count.

Darran's Latest Gadget

DarranHi there - I'm Darran, one of StorMan's Technical Support Agents. Each issue, I'll trawl through the deep depths of the internet to find you a funky piece of software, hardware or other interesting technological trinkets.

Desktop Sweeper: Do you have a friend who "has everything"? Well - I bet they don't have one of these! Roadsweepers are the often unsung heroes of society. With the Roadsweeper Desk Vac you can bring this same cleanliness to your desk!

It looks like its big brother, features rotating brushes & picks up unwanted crumbs and dust from your desk - using just 3x AA batteries. Note that a driver is not included, so you'll need to steer it yourself. Grab one here.

Acronym of the Month

You've probably come across HTML while browsing the web - but what does it stand for? HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language, and is the predominant markup language for web pages. HTML elements are the basic building-blocks of web pages and is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags, enclosed in angle brackets (like <html>), within the web page content. HTML tags most commonly come in pairs like <h1> and </h1>, although some tags, known as empty elements, are unpaired, for example <img>.

Options in Property Transactions

Options in Property Transactions - by guest blogger Eddie (BDO QLD)

GoldOne of the more useful devices that is often overlooked in property transactions is an option. Under the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) provisions, a contract that gives rise to an obligation to buy and sell a property will normally trigger a CGT event. This may be less than ideal, especially in situations where there is a substantial gap between the contract and settlement dates. The vendor may even find themselves having to find the cash to pay tax before they get any of the settlement proceeds in more extreme circumstances.

This is where an option will become invaluable. Under the law, if a vendor enters into an option to sell a property, no tax will generally be crystallised at that point, provided that the option will be exercised at a later date. To protect the interest of both the vendor and purchaser, a “put and call option” may be used, which means that the purchaser may exercise the option by calling upon the vendor to sell the property or the vendor may exercise the option by compelling the purchaser to buy the property under the terms of the option.
