Editor's Introduction

Greetings, %%Facility name%% and welcome to our November edition ...only one more edition until Christmas! I'm always surprised how quickly it creeps-up... and - is it just me - or are retailers getting a little too-eager with the decorations & Christmas carols? As usual, if you have any comments, ideas or suggestions, just get in touch with me via andy@marinasoftware.info. Until next time, happy surfing! :-)

Property Development - Key Points to Consider

Property Development - Key Points to Consider - by guest blogger Eddie (BDO QLD)

Like any other business, the primary objective of a property developer is to derive a return on investment when considering a project. Given that structuring and planning are crucial to the success of every business, the same rigour must be applied, in my view, to a property development project. To that end, the following are the key points to consider.

Asset and liability protection: The entity or entities to use to undertake the project will need to take into account the potential risk profiles of those involved. For instance, it may not be prudent to run a property development business in the same entity that is holding valuable property. Otherwise, if the business is sued, the property will be at risk.

Acronym of the Month

The acronym HDD refers to Hard Disk Drive; a non-volatile, random access digital magnetic data storage device. It features rotating rigid platters on a motor-driven spindle within a protective enclosure. Data is magnetically read from and written to the platter by read/write heads that float on a film of air above the platters.

Hard disk drives have been the dominant device for secondary storage of data in general purpose computers since the early 1960s & they have maintained this position because advances in their recording density have kept pace with the requirements for secondary storage.

Read more about HDD at Wikipedia.

Computer Tip of the Month

Strip all formatting

It may, at times, be necessary to strip all formatting from a piece of text. That is, reset all colours, font styles, bold / italics / underline, line spacing, margins, etc. While a number of tools are available to do this, the easiest is probably to "paste" the text in question into the Notepad program (available on Windows), or Textedit (on Mac).

As a simple text editor, these programs doesn't recognise rich text formatting and, as such, strips it all out - leaving you with clean, unformatted text to work with.

Darran's Latest Gadget

DarranHi there - I'm Darran, one of StorMan's Technical Support Agents. Each issue, I'll trawl through the deep depths of the internet to find you a funky piece of software, hardware or other interesting technological trinkets.

Funky Wallets: Sick of your wallet that looks the same as everyone else's? Never fear - the Paper Wallet & the Bacon Wallet are here! The paper wallet looks like old-school printer-paper from the 80's and is made of a tough wax-coated material so it doesn't rip or tear (a number of other designs are also available). A colleague here at StorMan has had this wallet for almost a year and although it's a little smooshed-up around the edges, it's lasted longer than his previous brand-name leather wallet!

The Bacon Wallet is made of vinyl but is printed to look like raw bacon... perfect for the bacon lovers out there! Sadly it doesn't taste, or smell, like [cooked] bacon... but you can't have everything.

Grab the Paper Wallet here, or the Bacon Wallet over here.
